Who's your favorite movie president—James Marshall or Thomas Whitmore? | The Tylt
While some Americans will be spending their Fourth of July wilting in the summer humidity, many—some may say smarter—citizens will choose to spend the holiday in the dark, air-conditioned confines of a movie theater. And what better way to keep cool and celebrate the founding of the nation than with one of our great cinematic presidents. Out of the dozens to choose from there are two clear frontrunners—President James Marshall from "Air Force One" and President Thomas Whitmore from "Independence Day." But which one of these presidents is best?

Harrison Ford's President James Marshall just wants these damn terrorists to get off his plane. Marshall's got a real intense vibe—and understandably, he's having a bad time! He's a little bit crazy-eyed, a little bit raspy, and a lotta bit good at punching bad guys. He's a veteran of the Vietnam War and a renegade when it comes to foreign policy, speaking his mind when maybe it's not the wisest decision. He's a little past his prime but that doesn't stop him from kicking some Russian terrorist ass. There's no geopolitical conflict he can't punch in the freaking face!
President James Marshall—played by peak Bill Pullman—is a man who cannot be flustered. Whether he's saying goodbye to his dying wife or leading the charge against an insurmountable alien force, this man maintains the steely resolve you want in a crisis. And boy, can he give a speech! Anytime I watch this speech I feel like I can take on the whole dang world! Sure, the movie starts by hinting that he's not a great president, the economy is struggling, his numbers are down. But boy, can he lead an army of misfits into certain death!
