Does sex help athletic performance?

Before Mexico's game against Germany at the World Cup, the team was rocked by a scandal with multiple players partying with escorts before the match. But El Tri showed a little pre-tournament action didn't hurt, beating the Germans 1-0. Coincidentally, Die Mannschaft players were banned from having "extracurricular activities" for the entire tournament. Some think sex is relaxing and can boost performance. Others think it's distracting. What do you think? 🍆🍑

Fooling around before a big sports game should not only be accepted, it should be encouraged. There's nothing wrong with being more relaxed. Here is Laura Stefani, an assistant professor of sports medicine at the University of Florence:

We show no robust scientific evidence to indicate that sexual activity has a negative effect upon athletic results. In fact, unless it takes place less than two hours before, the evidence actually suggests sexual activity may have a beneficial effect on sports performance.

Abstaining before athletic competitions is the only way to go. Sex can tire and exhaust athletes. It makes them too relaxed so you don't compete with an edge. Here is Steven Kurutz of the New York Times with more:

Muhammad Ali was said to have a hold-out period of six weeks before a fight. For Lennox Lewis, it was also many weeks. For Manny Pacquiao, it is just shy of two weeks, if he follows the advice of his trainer, Freddie Roach.

If it worked for world champions, it should work for everyone.
